PSALM FORTY FIVE A SONG OF LOVES. This is a Messianic Psalm. It is a song of a Royal Bride and Groom and as such foreshadows the love of Christ for His Church and of the Church for Christ. The theme is threefold. The Song of the King: the Song of the Bride; the Song of the Future. "My heart is bubbling with good stuff!" sings the psalmist in his opening line. His tongue moves along the stanzas as smoothly as a pen glides over paper. First he tells of the GRACE of the king, as fairer than the children of men. It is a pre-echo of the New Testament statement, "We beheld his glory, full of grace and truth." The GLORY of the king is next pictured. "Gird on Thy sword!" - the Truth is the sword of the Spirit. The king's throne is for ever and ever. Thus the psalmist depicts the permanence of the king. The JOYFUL ANOINTING of the king is next. It is worthy of note that along with the Oil of Gladness are mentioned garments that smell of myrrh, aloes and cassia. Myrrh and aloes were used in embalming oil. The kings joy is mentioned in connection with death. Our great king was able to suffer death for us BECAUSE of the JOY set before Him. The Song of the Bride follows a different theme. "Forget the past - forget your own people." The Church of Jesus Christ must put a low estimate on earthly treasure. We must enjoy the present. It is sadly possible to spoil the present with the past. Too often people dwell in the past because they feel that they have no future. Live this day for God and enjoy Him. In time of war we had to live one day at a time for we did not know what the next day would bring. "So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty," says the psalmist. Christ loves the simplicity, sincerity, purity and fidelity of the Church. The Psalm is completed with the Song of the Future. Love's future is for ever. "Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children." Instead of the past shall be the future. If we were certain that the future would be so much better than the past, with what eagerness we would let go of the past. God's word speaks clearly to all His people - look to the future. It is bright with promise. The people shall praise Him for ever ---------------------------------------------------- file: /pub/resources/text/hpalmer/psalms: ps-045.txt .
